For Little Rock-based food delivery service The Dandy Line Kitchen, helping others is what it’s all about.

With their freshly prepared, healthy, delicious and affordable meals created by Freshmaker/Chef Lindsey Gant, they make it easier on local folks to choose and have access to a healthier meal. But while they’re making it easier for people to eat healthy in the Little Rock community, they’re also making an incredible difference in a group of women’s lives.

The Dandy Line Kitchen is a social enterprise program of local nonprofit organization Hope Rises, and all proceeds from the business benefits the mission of Hope Rises. Hope Rises provides holistic services to previously incarcerated women to improve their own health and well being and provides opportunities for personal growth and empowerment. 

The Dandy Line Kitchen truly is a win-win for both customers seeking healthy, freshly prepared meals, and the women of Hope Rises. It embodies the concept of people supporting each other for the greater good of all.

So we were thrilled to be able to snag an interview with Freshmaker/Chef Lindsey, and she was kind enough to share more of her own story with us, along with what The Dandy Line Kitchen means to her, what they are striving to create in the Little Rock area and a few of her favorite tips around getting started with a healthier lifestyle. WE LOVE ALL THAT THE DANDY LINE KITCHEN STANDS FOR AND ALL THE CHANGE YOU ARE CREATING FOR SO MANY PEOPLE IN THE LITTLE ROCK COMMUNITY, INCLUDING THE WOMEN OF HOPE RISES AND FOLKS IN THE AREA WHO ARE TRYING TO LIVE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE AND MAKE BETTER FOOD CHOICES. WHAT YOU THINK PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MISSION AND PURPOSE OF HOPE RISES AND THE DANDY LINE KITCHEN?

The mission of Hope Rises is to empower women in every area of life. Women who have suffered serious trauma and walked through a life of addiction are broken. When I came out of prison in the spring of 2016, I had absolutely no hope, and without hope, there is no direction. When I arrived at the house, I immediately felt right at home and hit the ground running with all they offer. Hope Rises takes a holistic approach in healing women mentally, spiritually and physically. In addition to the core healing, one of the main objectives of Hope Rises is to assist women in finding employment with a livable wage. Not only has The Dandy Line Kitchen provided that for me, but it has also given me a purpose. Currently we employ another graduate for deliveries and hope to expand this kind of opportunity to others in the future. 

PEOPLE CAN GO TO THE DANDY LINE KITCHEN WEBSITE AND CHOOSE FROM FOUR OPTIONS REGARDING THEIR MEALS. WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT MEALS TO BE LIKE?

The Dandy Line Kitchen offers meals three days a week, delivered to your home or office. Our weekly meals are vegan and and mostly gluten-free. In the event the meal is not gluten-free, we do our best to provide a gluten-free option. We use the freshest ingredients available. Our dressings and sauces are made from scratch. The meals are versatile; some people eat them for lunch or they buy a Family Pack for dinner to feed their families.

YOU’RE KNOWN AS THE FRESHMAKER FOR THE DANDY LINE KITCHEN, WHICH IS ONE OF THE BEST TITLES WE’VE HEARD! HOW HAVE YOU BROUGHT YOUR OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH WHAT YOU PERSONALLY LEARNED WHILE AT HOPE RISES, INTO THE DANDY LINE KITCHEN?

During my journey at Hope Rises, I learned a completely new way to fuel my body. It’s really the foundation from which The Dandy Line Kitchen was created. I love to take something that is comforting and to modify it to fit a healthier model.

WHAT WOULD YOU PERSONALLY LOVE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GOING FORWARD AROUND NUTRITION AND HEALTHY EATING, AND TO BENEFIT THE DANDY LINE KITCHEN AS WELL?

I would like to learn how to calculate micros and macros of my meals.

WHAT ARE THE MOST REQUESTED MEALS YOU HAVE AT THE DANDY LINE KITCHEN?

Tacos are by far my most popular day! Black Bean and Sweet Potato Tacos are a Dandy Line staple, but the Buffalo Cauliflower would probably be runner up.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN THE KITCHEN, AS FAR AS NEW DISHES AND THE DANDY LINE KITCHEN MENU OPTIONS?

My first inspiration comes from what’s in season. I really like the food to speak for itself. Then I’ve got a pretty solid collection of past recipes, cookbooks and bloggers who I follow. This has all been a learning experience and with every season comes more opportunities to learn something new!

WHAT’S YOUR OWN FAVORITE, GO-TO HEALTHY WEEKNIGHT MEAL?

My favorite meal is a Creamy Coconut Curried Lentil dish served with basmati rice. A dish I can make once and eat on all week is definitely a winner!

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE TIP FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING TO CREATE HEALTHIER EATING HABITS?

Have an open mind about food. Sometimes we hear a vegetable or a component of a meal and we automatically think, “Oh, I don’t like that!” Just give that veggie a chance. You may find that you actually like it cooked a certain way or have a newfound liking for it. I believe our tastes do change and shift throughout our lives.

WHAT’S THE MANTRA YOU’RE LIVING BY RIGHT NOW?

It may be a little played out, but it still inspires me: eat good, feel good.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE DANDY LINE KITCHEN?

Currently we are working on a project with the Bowen School of Law. We are hoping to expand our client base as well so as to provide more employment opportunities.
